Wine allergies are said to be incredibly common. People suffer from headaches, congestion, even "flu like" symptoms. But figuring out to just what you are allergic, that's a bit tricky. Often blamed are sulfites, but yeast, egg whites and tannins can also be to blame. Personally, I am doubting today that yeast is my culprit, while baking a king cake for my weekend Mardi Gras Party, I purposely smeared yeast on my wrist. If I am allergic, I would expect to see some little skin reaction on that sensitive bit of skin on my inner arm. Not a thing.
Tom Ciocco offers some interesting insight into the allergens of wine in this article.
Though Tom is arguing against sulfite allergies as a targeted culprit, I think that he may perhaps have hit the nail on the head for me. My chest tightening and wheezing after drinking wine actually began over the Holidays when I switched to white wine. After about a week of white wine, I could not even have another sip. I even had trouble breathing after cooking with it.
Realistically, unless I am on the floor gasping for air, I am not going to get a little asthmatic reaction checked out, so this food allergy "experiment" that I am doing is all I've got.
And the wealth of knowledge available on the web. But for now, I am going to focus my research on sulfites.
